Alexandra Theatre offers new open day to see behind the scenes

Following the success of The Alexandra, Birmingham’s free Open Day in September 2023, the theatre will once again throw open its doors and invite visitors to explore behind the scenes of the beautiful, historic venue on Saturday, 11 May.

Visitors can expect a day packed full of creativity for the local community to get involved with – and it’s all completely free to attend! Everyone is welcome; whether your interest lies in theatre and heritage buildings or you’re a family looking to fill your weekend with activities, there will be something on offer for all to enjoy.

Test your technical skills and ‘light up the stage’ with the state-of-the-art lighting system used in professional shows, access the fly floor and even have a go on the sound desk. There will be the opportunity to tour behind the scenes of the theatre with expert guides, delve into the archives on display and ask the things people want to know about The Alex and its history.

The Alexandra is delighted to have enlisted Artist & Designer Garry Jones – who specialises in Community Arts – to provide craft activities for all ages in the theatre’s Bridge Bar.

Exclusive ticket offers will be available to access at the Box Office and The Alex has also partnered with local eateries to offer special food discounts – details of which will be available from the venue, on the day.

With plenty of activities available to get involved with, this is a unique opportunity to see the theatre during a ‘dark day’ when no shows are on stage and the theatre is usually closed to the public.

Simon Creed, Theatre Director at The Alexandra, Birmingham said:

“We are delighted to be throwing open our doors for another community open day. Last year was a resounding success welcoming over 300 visitors to the venue – on one of the hottest days of the year! We think there will be a little something for everyone to enjoy on this Open Day, so bring your best creativity and an adventurous spirit, and join us in celebrating our gorgeous venue and the millions of hours of entertainment it has provided to generations of Brummies and beyond!”
